The Hillbillies volleyball team swept University High School 25-23, 25-22 in Newark Friday behind senior Catherine Aracil. As the lead switched back and forth, Aracil playing the tough opposite position and served up a series of hard to handle service points and aces that enabled the Hillbillies to pull a head in both games. Junior outside hitter Eliza Sniatkowski served up five aces while Jessica Parson, Nikita Joshi and Amanda Langan led the team in blocks and kills. Junior Ellen DiDia played stellar defense in the effort leading the team in digs.
In other action, the Verona girls tennis team was swept yesterday by an undefeated Millburn High School team. The loss drops their record to 3-4.
The boys soccer team fell 6-1 to East Side High School in Newark. Verona’s lone goal came from Troy Carrington. Jason Goncalves was the lead scorer for East Side, with three goals, while teammates Lucas De Oliveira, Diago Ribeiro and Shamar Smart each had one. Verona’s record is now 2-3-0.
On Saturday, the football team takes on the Bulldogs of Shabazz High School at 1 p.m. at Doc Goeltz Field. Parking will be tight, so consider walking.
