The girl’s tennis team swept their Essex County Tournament match over Bloomfield High School yesterday in Branch Brook Park. Senior Jackie Noyes defeated Jasmine Daniel in first singles 6-0, 6-1. Allie Vaccaro topped Andrea Reyes 6-2, 6-0 and Caroline Chivily defeated Sydney Fletcher 6-0, 6-1. In doubles matches, the team of Brianna Tedesco and Skye Reeves won 6-0, 6-0, and Angelica Bryan and Gabrielle Brenne won 6-1, 6-0.
Junior Jillian Sprong’s two first half goals put the Hillbillies girls soccer team in front of MKA 2-0 at half time. However, the Maroon and White couldn’t hold on as the Cougars scored three times in the second half for a 3-2 win. The loss dropped the Hillbillies record to 3-2 on the season.
After their second meet on Thursday, both the Verona girls and boys cross country teams remain undefeated in Super Essex Conference competition at Branch Brook Park. The girls won over Columbia (15 to 50), Central (19 to 40) and West Side (25 to 30), while the boys beat Cedar Grove (16 to 47) and West Side (19 to 42). Melanie Egan once again was the overall top runner in her race with a time of 20:39, followed by teammates Sarah Conboy (23:45), Julia Capuano (24:02), Laura Williams (26:02), Gabrielle Horton (26:32), Alex Smith (27:37), Madelyn Boyle (28:35) and Lara Eremita (28:38). The boys were led by John Conboy (18:56), Fernando Padilla (18:58), Matt Carroll (19:19), Jim Cuddihy (20:17), Dan Stryker (21:21), Brad Smith (21:34), Joey Volpe (21:44) and Chris Feury (22:00).
It’s a busy weekend in Hillbilly Country. On Friday, the boys’ soccer squad travels to Newark to take on East Side High School. The girl’s tennis team heads to Millburn High School and the volleyball team has a match at Newark’s University High School. All contests begin at 4 p.m.
On Saturday, the football team takes on the Bulldogs of Shabazz High School at 1 p.m. at Doc Goeltz Field (the lower VHS field). The girls tennis team continues their march to an Essex County title when they travel to Branch Brook Park for a 9 a.m. start.
