Hobcaw Cafe, which had brought a touch of southern home cooking to Verona for the past two years, announced yesterday that it has closed. Rumors had swirled on Monday as patrons arrived at the Grove Avenue restaurant only to find it dark and the doors locked.
Owner Nancy McArthur put up this note on Hobcaw’s Facebook page late yesterday:
Today was the saddest day in Hobcaw history, as we closed our doors. Our amazing staff members are heartbroken especially since we felt we had a mission. So, please help us continue by eating pure food that is all natural. Don’t buy mixes, instead cook from scratch And most of all, drop the fast food. You can do this! We committed over two years of our lives because we want you to enjoy the gift of nutrient dense food!
Hobcaw opened in May 2010 and quickly became known for its good food and commitment to good causes, like gingerbread house contests that raised money for soup kitchens. It welcomed Verona High School students as its graphic artists, and other talented Verona chefs to its kitchen, like Kate Crepezzi and Amy Dunphy.
“We could not make our premise work,” said McArthur last night, “but the wonderful people on our staff were the key to the food. Amy Dunphy is such an exceptional pastry chef that she elevated our practice throughout. We will publish recipes at some point in the future. Seems only fair since we aren’t cooking for folks anymore.”
So sad to hear of Hobcaw’s closing. I grew up in Verona and would go for lunch every time I was in town. Best of luck in the future
Hobcaw will be missed! Very sad that they had to close.
I am so sad that Hobcaw is closing! They are such lovely people and fabulous tea(where can one get good tea in Verona now?), muffins and scones! And their pies were great…
I am so sorry to see Hobcaw close! It was one of the best lunch spots to hang out with friends! Thank you for the last 2 years, you will be missed!
so sorry to see yet another great business close in Verona – wishing them much luck and success in their next venture!
To go to Hobcaw for breakfast was a special treat. It was a great pleasure to sit by the window and read while enjoying a delicious breakfast, Hobcaw was a sanctuary, a blessed way to begin a day.
Then too, it was a delightful place to go with friends for lunch and savor the very best quiche or a wonderful
salad AND scrumptious dessert.
Love and Thanks to all the McArthurs and their great staff. Julia
It is bittersweet. The quality, freshness and healthiness of the food at Hobcaw took time and effort. Nancy, you ran such a top notch cafe…with love and heart. I’m sure your culinary delights will continue in other ways. Thank you for giving me so many delicious moments. I’ll never forget Hobcaw. Best of Luck in whatever you do. XOXO
