Belly dancing class at Verona Yoga on Thursday!

Verona’s public schools and municipal government are closed in observance of Rosh Hashanah today, Monday, September 17. The Town Council meeting that would normally be tonight has been moved to tomorrow night at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers in Town Hall. The Verona Environmental Commission also meets tomorrow night. That meeting is at 7:30 in the Community Center. The Verona Municipal Alliance Committee, which runs Family Night and a wide variety of substance abuse education programs, is Thursday, September 20, in the Community Center. Meetings of the Town Council and all town commissions, committees and boards are always open to the public.

There are no Verona High School sports on Monday or Tuesday, but there’s a full schedule starting Wednesday. The boys soccer team is home against Nutley, with a 4 p.m. start at Centennial Field. The girls tennis team is home against Millburn while the volleyball team will be traveling to Barringer High School at Newark. Both of those are 4 p.m. starts too.

The Verona Music Parents Association has a board and committee meeting on Wednesday at VHS at 7 p.m. The H.B. Whitehorne SCA meets Wednesday night in the media center at 7:30 p.m and that meeting is open to all middle school parents.

On Thursday, September 20, the girls soccer team takes on MKA at Centennial at 4 p.m., while the boys and girls cross country teams will be in Newark’s Branch Brook Park, with a 4:30 p.m. start.

The kids aren’t the only ones who will shake it this week: There’s a belly dancing class at Verona Yoga on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Verona Yoga is located opposite Verona Park at 546 Bloomfield Avenue. Thursday evening is also Back to School Night at Forest Avenue School, starting at 7 p.m.

On Friday, September 21, the boys soccer team heads to East Side High School in Newark for a 4 p.m. game. The volleyball team will also be in Newark against University High School at 4 p.m.

The Hillbilly football team has its home opener against Shabazz High School on Saturday, September 22, at 1 p.m. Because of the problems on the field closest to VHS, the game will be played on the lower field closest to Grove Avenue.

And finally, there going to be some family fun at Brookdale Avenue School on Saturday, too. The school’s Fall Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be pony rides, bounce house, dunk tank, face painting, spin art, sand art, cotton candy, games, food and art and crafts. All a prices that are easy on a family budget.
