What a difference a year makes. In 2011, Jenna Atmeh had three hits for the Verona High School softball team. In 2012, she has had 17. She’s got 17 runs batted in to her credit this season, up from one in her junior year, and eight runs scored–up from just two in 2011. For this and all her contributions to the VHS softball team, Atmeh is this week’s Verona Sports Boosters Senior Athlete Of The Week.
Off the field, Atmeh strolls across town with a broad, friendly smile and an easy gait. On the field, there’s an intense gaze as the third base player scans the action for ways to keep opposing players from crossing the stretch of field she guards–or opportunities to score herself.
That intensity isn’t just reserved for softball. In winter, Atmeh has been a key player on the VHS volleyball team, racking up 67 career aces, 71 kills, 170 digs and 58 assists.
She’s been assisting with something else this spring as well: Helping her parents turn the former Verona Variety location into a new neighborhood eatery, the Corner Store Deli.
