The Verona boy’s tennis team moved on in the NJSIAA state tournament semifinal round for North Jersey, Section 1, Group 1 with a 4-1 victory over Waldwick High School. After a rare loss in first singles for senior Matt Tuorto, Alejandro Diaz was up 5-0 in second singles before his opponent retired. Josh Solomon came up big for the Hillbillies in third singles. After dropping the first game, Solomon battled back to pick up a much needed 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win for Verona. In doubles, Steven McMickle/Jake Miller won 6-1, 6-0 and Matt Brehne/Torsten Kolind won by forfeit.

The Verona softball team fell to the Mounties of Montclair High School 6-5 yesterday in extra innings at Montclair. The Hillbillies led 5-1 through four innings but couldn’t hold on. The Mounties tied it in the bottom of the fourth to make it 5-5 before scoring in the bottom of the eighth frame to send Verona home with their eighth loss of the season against 11 wins. Marissa Manley went the distance on the pitcher’s mound for Verona.

Thursday in Hillbilly Nation the baseball team plays at home against Boonton High School and the tennis team takes on Bloomfield High School in a rescheduled game from May 9.
