Wins For Tennis, Softball, Baseball

The girls’ lacrosse team lost a close match against the Montclair Mountaineers yesterday at Montclair’s Woodman Field. Julieanne Mascera led the Hillbillies with three goals and Jackie Brozyna netted two. Also putting up points Verona were Julia Frazee, Casie Milmoe and Lizzie Scandiffio. With the 10-8 defeat the girls’ record moved to 3-3 on the season.

The Hillbillies tennis team swept their rival Cedar Grove 5-0 to go to 6-1 on the season. In first singles Matt Tuorto dropped his first game but battled back to take the match 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. In other singles matches, Alejandro Diaz won 6-1, 6-0 and Josh Solomon won 6-2, 6-1. In doubles, Matt Brehne/Torsten Kolind won 7-6, 6-2 and Jake Miller/Steven McMickle won 6-0, 6-4.

The softball team pushed their record to 6-1 with a 9-8 come-from-behind win over the Columbia Cougars yesterday in Verona. Trailing 7-0 after the second inning, the Verona comeback was helped by Courtney Paganelli’s two hits and RBI and Caroline Chivily’s triple and 2 RBIs. Jenna Atmeh tripled and scored and Shelly Herman singled and had an RBI. Laura Hart singled scored and had an RBI, and Paige Ferrell pitched for the Hillbillies.

Senior captain Tim Kiernan went 4-4 to lead the Hillbillies baseball team to their fifth win of the season over East Orange Campus yesterday in East Orange. Max Vasile, Jonathan Tosh and Luke Weiss limited the Jaguars to just one run. Nick Looney and Luke Sniatkowski both hit home runs for Verona; it was Looney’s third of the season. The baseball record stands at 5-2.

In Tuesday Hillbilly action, the tennis team is at Brookdale Park for the Essex County tournament semi-finals. The golf team takes on Newark Science and Bloomfield at the Montclair Golf Club. The softball team travels to Newton High School and the boys’ lacrosse team is at Centennial Field.
