Verona High School’s track and field teams took on Newark’s Technology High School, Weequahic High School and Marylawn of the Oranges Academy on Tuesday and came away with victories against two of the three teams. Verona beat Weequahic 71-66 and Marylawn 105-23, but fell to Tech 88-51.
The quad meet, held at the H.B. Whitehorne Middle School track, saw strong performances by several female Hillbillies. Marybeth Grund had a 1:11 time in the 400 meter hurdles, while Colleen Farrell had a 13.5 in the 100M and a 27.4 in the 200M. Kelsey Attamante and Sarah Conboy had a 2:34 time in the 800M.
Distance champ Heather Sweeney turned in a 5:35 in the 1600M and a 11:57 time in the 3200M. Laura Williams took on the 100M hurdles in 16.7.
In the field events, Julia Ashley went 15’2″ in the long jump and Gaby Mercurio went over the bar at 8’0″ in the pole vault. Colleen Carr, this week’s Verona Sports Boosters Athlete of the Week, had a 4’6″ mark in the high jump.
Kate Percevault went 95’6″ in discus and a 29’6″ mark in shot-put. Alison Sprong had a 78’8″ throw in javelin.
