The Verona girls lacrosse team suffered an opening day loss on Saturday, when they fell to the Knights of West Essex High School 13-2. The Knights, one of the top Group 2 teams in North Jersey, were led by Natalie Cafone and Amanda Cassera, who combined for 8 goals.

Verona’s offense was led by senior Julieanne Mascera and sophomore Lauren Ednie, who scored one goal each. Freshman Jackie Brozyna had and assist and Melanie McCLellan had six saves in goal. The girl’s have an away contest against Morristown Beard today at 4 p.m. and they are home at at Centennial Field on Wednesday at 4 p.m. against the Caldwell Chiefs.

The rest of the spring sports season gets into full swing today when the Hillbillies baseball squad takes on Glen Ridge at home. Tomorrow the team takes on rival Cedar Grove at home; both games start at 4 p.m. UPDATE: The baseball opener against Glen Ridge has been moved to Tuesday and the Cedar Grove game will be moved to Wednesday; both are home games with a 4 p.m. start.

The girls softball team plays at Glen Ridge High School today in a 4 p.m. start. The varsity tennis team travels to West Orange High School for their opener. The boy’s lacrosse team has their opening match at Centennial at 4 p.m. against the Clifton Mustangs.
