Palm Sunday services at First Presbyterian Church will be Sunday, April 1 at 10:15 a.m. and will include waving of palms, hosannas and praises by the Praise and Senior Choirs under the direction of Charlotte Cunningham. Becky Vega will present a flute prelude and accompany the choirs. As a tradition, the congregation will join the choirs in singing “The Palms” by Gabriel Faure. Pastor Erik Spencer’s sermon will be, “Pieta on Bleeker Street”.
Maundy Thursday observances on April 5 will include be a family service commencing with a light dinner at 6:30 p.m. After the meal has been shared, worshippers will move to the sanctuary, stopping in the church narthex for the ritual of hand washing, symbolizing the servant hood of Jesus and his disciples. In the sanctuary, the sacrament of Holy Communion will be celebrated. Pastor Erik Spencer will be assisted in worship leadership by members of this year’s confirmation class.
Good Friday, April 6, members of the United Presbyterian Church of Cedar Grove will join the Verona church for a noon-time service of prayers and the reading of the passion narrative. The Rev. Paul Boger of the Cedar Grove church will join Pastor Erik Spencer in worship leadership.
A Good Friday Children’s Workshop for children in preschool through fourth grade will teach children about Good Friday and the Resurrection in crafts, baking, music, and games. The cost is $5, which includes lunch. Please call 973-239-3561 to register.
Easter Sunday Celebration of the Resurrection on April 8 will begin with a prelude of trumpets, timpani and organ at 10:45 a.m. The Praise and Senior Choirs will sing festive Easter music and will lead the congregation in traditional Easter hymns of praise and joy.
First Presbyterian Church is at the corner of Fairview and Bloomfield avenues. Parking is available by the back door and the building is handicap accessible. The community is invited to all of these services.
