The Verona boys’ basketball team took home a dramatic 54-46 come from behind victory in the NJSIAA Tournament, First Round, North Jersey, Section 1, Group 1 game over Pompton Lakes.
Playing at home on Monday, the Hillbillies led by one point at halftime(22-21) but Pompton Lakes pulled out in front in the third quarter to set the ‘billies back 37-34 heading into the final frame.
Seniors Brian Farrell (26 points) and Anthony Huber (15 points) took control as Verona exploded for 20 fourth-quarter points and holding the Cardinals to just nine. Alex Kaslander scored seven points and senior Packy Malanga netted five. Point Guard Matt Braschi had five assists and two steals while Luke Weiss’s strong presence underneath the basket resulted in a point and three rebounds. Also seeing action for the 19-8 Hillbillies were Mike Coppola and Frank Ferrari.
Verona, which is the #3 seed, faces #6 Bogota tomorrow night at home. The game starts at 5 p.m.
