The Verona High School boys basketball team improved its record to 18-8 yesterday with a 52-51 victory over Newark Arts High School.
Arts narrowly edged out Verona in scoring in the first two quarters of play, but Verona brought an even stronger game than usual out of the locker room after halftime, running up 21 points to just eight for Arts. While Arts would rally in the fourth quarter, it wasn’t enough to take away the lead that Verona had built up.
Senior Brian Farrell, who had been out with a back injury for several games, turned in his best performance all season, leading all scorers with 28 points. His efforts were seconded by Anthony Huber with 15 points. The leading scorer for Newark Arts was Jerrel Pruit with 22 points.
Verona kicks off the North 1, Group 1 NJSIAA Tournament on Monday, February 27, with a first round game against Pompton Lakes. Verona goes into the playoffs as the #3 seed; Pompton Lakes is seeded #14.
