The United Way of Northern New Jersey is teaming up with the IRS, AARP, and Newark Now to provide low- and moderate-income residents with free tax preparation from IRS-certified volunteers. From now through April 15, north Essex residents can call 2-1-1 to make an appointment to have their tax returns prepared at the United Way building in Montclair. Last year, more than 1,000 returns were filed for a total of $976,990 in tax dollars returned to the North Essex community.
Every tax return is prepared by a volunteer who has undergone between 20 and 80 hours of IRS training. In addition, each return undergoes a review by a second preparer. Returns are filed electronically, also saving clients the additional fee for e-filing. The free service is available only to families and individuals with a simple return (1040, 1040A, 1040EZ, Schedules A & B).
