If your child is going to be of kindergarten age this fall, you should get a registration form in to the public school system by the close of business tomorrow, Friday, January 13. If you haven’t already gotten the basic form in the mail, you can pick one up at the school office at 121 Fairview Avenue. The office, which is open from 7:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., is located inside the southern end of Verona High School; use the staircase closest to Franklin.

To be eligible for kindergarten, children must be five years of age on or before October 1, 2012. Kindergarten in Verona is still only a half-day program, running from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. To register, you will need an enrollment form, your child’s original birth certificate (the one with the raised seal) and proof of residency and what the district calls “attachment” to that address. Acceptable proofs of domicile include a current lease, deed or property tax bill. For proof of attachment , you’ll need to show a utility, telephone or cable bill in your name. When you register, you will be given a packet of health forms and a pre-kindergarten questionnaire, all of which must be completed prior to the start of school in September.

While Verona has four public elementary schools–Brookdale, F.N. Brown, Forest and Laning–you may not be able to get your child into the one closest to your home this year. The district says that, given enrollment projections for 2012-2013, some re-districting may be necessary to maintain desired class sizes and to stay within building capacities. You’ll be notified as to where your child will be going in late January before kindergarten orientations begin.

Kindergarten orientations will be held at all four schools, for both parents and children. The parent orientation at Forest will be March 8 at 7 p.m., Brookdale will be March 26 and 6:45 p.m., March 29 at 7 p.m. at F.N. Brown, and May 7 at Laning at 6:45 p.m. The orientation workshops for children will be on four Saturday mornings from 10 to 11 a.m.: February 4, March 3, April 14 and May 5.
