While the rest of us are shaking off our holiday meal overloads, the Verona High School basketball and hockey teams are gearing up for a week of tournament games.
Hockey goes first, with the Holiday Hockey Tournament that takes place at the Codey Arena in West Orange starting today, Monday, December 26 at 2 p.m.. The games, which feature a variety of area high school teams, will continue on Wednesday and Friday.
For the first round on Monday, Seton Hall plays Dumont at 2 p.m., followed by Nutley against Mountain Lakes at 4 p.m., the Verona-Glen Ridge team against DePaul at 6 p.m. , and Livingston against West Morris at 8 p.m. The Wednesday and Friday games will be played at the same intervals; check back here to see when VGR is playing on those days.
Tickets are $5 for adults and $4 for kids, and when you’ve seen enough hockey, you can take in the free holiday lights show at Turtle Back Zoo or have a bite to eat at McLoone’s Boathouse, the new restaurant at South Mountain reservation. And all the games will all be played on rink #1, which means that there’s still the regular public skating on rink #2.
The boys and girls basketball tournaments, which take place at Caldwell College, start Tuesday afternoon. The girls take the floor against Caldwell at 3 p.m., while the boys follow at 5 p.m. Depending on how those games go, the teams will be back in action on Thursday. Again, check back here for details.
UPDATE: The Verona-Glen Ridge Hockey team won its game against DePaul, 7-2. It faces Livingston on Wednesday, December 28 at 8 p.m. at Codey Arena. Both the boys and girls basketball teams also won. The girls’ next game is Thursday, December 29 at 5 p.m. and the boys take the court at 7 p.m. Both of those games are in Caldwell College’s Newman Center.
