Verona High School seniors Julieanne Mascera and Carolyn Mols combined for 17 points but that wasn’t enough for the Hillbillies to overcome an early deficit against the Panthers of Cedar Grove. Down by 12 points at half time, the Hillbillies exploded for fifteen third-quarter points but the Panthers were able to keep pace and pull out a 40-29 win. Junior Amanda Langan led the Hillbillies with 13 rebounds, Michelle Frungillo had four points and Amanda Cummings added three in the effort. Mascera nailed a three-pointer from long range. The lady Hillbillies dropped to 0-2 on the season.

The Verona boys team, however, moved to 2-0 with a 26-24 win at Cedar Grove. The game was tied 14-14 at halftime and the Hillbillies were able to outscore the Panthers 7-4 in the 4th quarter to pull out the win. Senior Captain Patrick Malanga led the way with 10 points.
