The Verona Hillbillies boys basketball team exploded for 23 third-quarter points to win their season opener at home against the Montclair Immaculate Lions 57-47. Senior captains Brian Farrell and Anthony Huber hit for 14 points apiece. Captain Patrick Malanga had eight points aided by two three pointers and sophomore Matt Braschi chipped in with two. Second-year starter sophomore Alex Kaslander was the story of the night as he dumped in five three-point shots from long range to lead the Maroon and White with 19 points.
The Verona girls team suffered a loss in their season opener 60-43 against the Raiders of Nutley.
Both teams will be back on the court on Tuesday afternoon with games that start at 4 p.m. The boys are away against Cedar Grove, while the girls take on Cedar Grove at home.
