A nine-count indictment has been returned against former Verona Mayor Matthew Kirnan, charging him with misapplication of entrusted funds, theft by failure to make required disposition and theft by unlawful taking. The indictment alleges he stole approximately $750,000 in clients’ funds.
According the the Essex County Prosecutor’s office, the indictment alleges that on Jan. 26, 2009 in West Caldwell, Kirnan unlawfully took $408,400 from a client. The money was supposed to be used to pay off an outstanding bank loan.
On Oct. 19, 2009, also in West Caldwell, the indictment further alleges he unlawfully took $220,000 in funds he held in connection with an estate matter.
Finally on June 24, 2010, also in West Caldwell, he failed to pay off a $121,128.14 second mortgage, while acting as an attorney representing a buyer.
Kirnan relinquished his license to practice law in New Jersey in September 2010.
