Things seem to be coming in pairs for the the Verona-Glen Ridge Hockey team this season: Its first two games ended in ties; its second two have resulted in losses. And the 8-3 division loss to Montclair Kimberley Academy on December 7 also cost VGR a key defense player. Nick DiStaso broke his ankle in that game and is out for four to six weeks.

On Saturday, December 10, VGR was ready to take down Kennebecasis Valley, the Canadian team they so narrowly defeated last year. That game ended with VGR on top 5-4; however, Saturday night’s game was not the same. VGR lost 7-1.

Although Verona junior Bobby Maguire scored the game’s first goal in the first two minutes to put VGR at a 1-0 lead, the Canadian team came back to score seven unanswered goals.

Not only did they outscore VGR, but they also outshot VGR with 50 shots on goal for Kennebecasis Valley and 10 for VGR. Kennebecasis Valley dominated in VGR’s zone despite their five penalties. VGR was unable to capitalize on the Canadian team’s mistakes, ultimately ending the game in a nasty defeat.

Thomas Rice of Kennebecasis Valley had two goals in the game. Verona sophomore Dylan DeCandia and Verona freshmen Jake Paganelli had the assists on the Maguire goal.

VGR’s next game is at Codey Arena Friday night against West Orange with a 6:45 p.m. start.
