Last year, when the Verona-Glen Ridge Hockey team took to the ice, Chris Lapone frequently made the box score with assists. This season, he is stepping out as a scorer in his own right. As the Verona High School winter sports season gets under way, Chris Lapone has been named this week’s Verona Sports Boosters Senior Athlete of the Week.
In the three games that VGR has played so far, Lapone, a team co-captain who wears No. 17, has already had two goals and two assists. The forward scored in the third period of the opener against Pequannock and in the second period of the December 5 match against Montclair High School, after giving an assist on the Max Linnett goal that opened the game. We’ll likely be seeing more of his work on goals and assists both before the season ends.
And after he hangs up his VGR skates, Lapone will be back on a warmer playing venue with the VHS boys lacrosse team. The midfielder has already been named one of three co-captains for the squad that takes the field next spring.
During the 2011-2012 school year, the Verona Sports Boosters will be recognizing a different senior athlete at Verona High School every week. The Boosters support male and female athletes in all VHS sports through a variety of fundraisers and recognition events.
