The final score of the Verona Hillbillies’ 2011 season was a two-point conversion in the Thanksgiving game against Caldwell High School. Freshman quarterback Frank Ferrari was on the starting end of the play. On the receiving end was senior Captain Jack Cummings, this week’s Verona Sports Boosters Senior Athlete of the Week.
The Caldwell play was a fitting way to cap Cummings’s football career at Verona High School. Cummings is a three-year varsity starter as an outside linebacker and two-year starter as a fullback. He is credited with 28 career tackles, including eight in the season opener against Cedar Grove. He’s pulled down 35 yards as a receiver this season and 45 yards rushing, and was a standout in Verona’s October 17 win over the Lions of Montclair’s Immaculate Conception. Springtime has generally found Cummings out with the VHS track team, as a thrower, hurdler and runner.
During the 2011-2012 school year, the Verona Sports Boosters will be recognizing a different senior athlete at Verona High School every week. The Boosters support male and female athletes in all VHS sports through a variety of fundraisers and recognition events.
