When she is on the move, it is rare to catch Heather Sweeney in a smile. Whether on the cross country course in fall or pounding down the track oval in winter and spring, this senior scholar-athlete is seriously intent about her purpose: winning. Sweeney’s drive and determination have earned her the nod as the Verona Sports Boosters Senior Athlete of the Week.
Sweeney has toted up an impressive string of wins and accolades in her four years at Verona High School, most notably last Friday when she carried the cross country Sectional meet at Warinanco Park in Elizabeth with a stunning time of 20:53.8. Sweeney, who is the captain of the 2011 cross-country team is a three-year All-County selection.
In winter track, she is the VHS record holder at 1600 and 3200 meters, and anchored the VHS record-holder distance medley team. Sweeney was also an All-County selection. In spring track, she is the Hillbilly 3200m record holder. She qualified for Meet of Champions 2011 this past spring as a junior and was an All-State Group 1 Team Selection. And she achieved all these records while making the High Honor Roll every marking period at V.H.S.
During the 2011-2012 school year, the Verona Sports Boosters will be recognizing a different senior athlete at Verona High School every week. The Boosters support male and female athletes in all VHS sports through a variety of fundraisers and recognition events.
