Calling all new and experienced bakers and decorators! Help provide food to Newark’s hungry during the holidays while experiencing the joy of using your pastry skills to create an edible holiday fantasy.

Hobcaw Cafe is sponsoring a gingerbread house competition to raise funds for Operation Cheer, a Newark soup kitchen. Houses will be displayed for public voting from Monday, December 5 through Saturday, December 17, and winners will be announced at brunch on Sunday, December 18, 2011. It costs $5 to register to compete.

“Verona has so many talented cooks, and with the great public minded organizations in town, we also have generous, caring volunteers who want to help others,” said Nancy McArthur, Hobcaw’s chef owner. “Especially this year, we hope the contest provides a new way to share and celebrate the holiday season.”

New bakers and kids of any age may attend the Gingerbread House Workshop at the Verona Public Library on Thursday, November 17 at 3:30 p.m. Amy Dunphy, Hobcaw’s pastry chef, will join McArthur in creating a gingerbread house while discussing the history of gingerbread houses and providing recipes and preparation tips. To register for this event, contact Cheryl Ashley, children’s librarian, at (973) 857-4848.

Prizes will be awarded to winners in the adult, child and community group divisions. In addition to the People’s Choice Winners selected by public votes, winners will also be chosen for originality, overall Appearance and Use of Creative Materials. The houses must be completely edible, and kits may not be used. Professional bakers are not eligible to enter the contest although we welcome their creative displays. More detailed rules for contestants are available here.

To enter download this entry form and get it to the cafe by Tuesday, November 22. Houses must be delivered by Sunday, December 4.

Hobcaw Cafe is located at 20 Grove Avenue, featuring an organic coffee and tea bar, artisan bakery, breakfast, lunch, and private chef services. For more information, please contact Nancy McArthur at 973-239-2329.
