If you are looking for a day trip during this week’s NJEA Teacher’s Convention, Storm King Art Center, in New Windsor, N.Y. is well worth the 70-minute drive from Verona.
An easy ride north on the Parkway to the New York State Thruway, this 500+ acre outdoor area is a great spot for children to run free in open space as well as explore art, specifically sculpture. Unlike an indoor art museum, there is plenty of space for running, rolling down hills, and picnicking. The art is larger than life and while most pieces do not permit a “hands on” experience, the impressive nature of it is not lost on viewers.
Storm King Art Center is open Wednesday through Sunday until November 13 of this year. The grounds will stay open on Friday, Saturdays and Sunday only through November 27. Then Storm King closes for winter, and will reopen in the spring of 2012 for the next season. Children under five are free, students are $8 and adults are $12. The map below will get you there.
