It’s been a cold time for tennis, but Verona High School senior Ashley Stockwell has been on fire.
Stockwell won each of her matches in her last outings and led Verona to a 3-0 week. In her match against Golda Och Academy, she came back to win 4-6, 6-0,7-5 over Gabi Wolberger. She won 6-0, 6-2 over Cedar Grove’s Brielle Freda and 6-2, 6-3 over Caldwell’s Sara Lobdell. Stockwell has been selected as the Verona Sports Boosters Senior Athlete of the Week.
Stockwell, who last tennis season was named All-Group 1 Third Team by the Star Ledger, is closing out her athletic career at VHS in style, with string of tennis wins. When the ground thaws in spring, she will be back on the diamond for the VHS softball team. Stockwell started playing with the Verona Baseball Softball League in elementary school and, her coaches recall her as a very good player who easily held her own on teams dominated by boys.
During the 2011-2012 school year, the Verona Sports Boosters will be recognizing a different senior athlete at Verona High School every week. The Boosters support male and female athletes in all VHS sports through a variety of fundraisers and recognition events.
