In the first round of the NJSIAA/Sports Authority North Jersey, Section 1, Group 1 tournament in Hasbrouck Heights yesterday, the Verona Hillbillies girls soccer team topped New Milford 3-2 in double overtime.
It was an all-freshman scoring barrage as Claire Fitzpatrick took an assist from Sydney White to put Verona High School out in front after a scoreless first half. New Milford scored twice to take a 2-1 lead but freshman Julia Ashley scored late in the second frame to knot the score at 2-2. Verona took home a 3-2 victory when Ashley scored off a corner kick in the second over time. Senior Alison Sprong had 11 saves in goal for Verona.
The boys soccer team, which is seeded No. 1 in its bracket, will host No. 16 seed Butler at Millburn High School. The game starts at 7 p.m.
