The “second” season gets under way Monday and Tuesday, October 31 and November 1 for Verona’s boys and girls soccer teams and the girls volleyball squad. The boys and girls teams also will celebrate “Senior Night” tonight, Friday, October 28, in a double-header at Centennial Field, with the boys kicking off at 5 p.m. followed by the girls game at 7 p.m. The girls host Montclair Kimberley in a rivalry game, and the boys play Irvington High in an important conference match-up.

In the state playoff competition, the boys team (with a 14-1 record going into Friday’s game) has received the No. 1 seeding in the North Jersey Section 1, Group 1, playoff bracket, and will host No. 16 seed Butler (1-14-2) at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Centennial Field. This is the highest seeding the boys team has received in many years. The boys team also has regular-season games remaining on the schedule, which will determine their bid for a conference championship.

The girls team will face New Milford first

The girls soccer team (9-7) has been seeded No. 9 in the North Jersey Section 1, Group 1, playoff bracket. The girls (five wins and two losses since mid-October) will travel to No. 8 seed New Milford High School (10-7-1). The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday. The winner of this game plays at top-seeded Pompton Lakes in the second round.

The girls volleyball team received the No. 13 seed and must go on the road to play Rutherford High School in the North Jersey Section 1, Group 1, playoffs. The first-round match is scheduled for a 4 p.m. Tuesday tip-off.
