Nick Lukas of the Verona High School cross country team has been selected as the Verona Sports Boosters Senior Athlete of the Week. At the Brett Taylor Invitational at Darlington Park this past weekend, Lukas ran the 5k course in 16:16, a personal best and the fourth fastest time at that distance in Verona High School history.
When Lukas started his running career at VHS, he ran somewhat in the shadow of “The Daves”: His older brother Dave Lukas and Dave Oster, both of whom graduated with the class of 2010. Now, Nick Lukas is coming into his own as one of the top runners in the county and in group 1. He has a singular focus on running, competing in cross country in the fall, indoor track in winter and outdoor track in spring. On Labor Day, he was the leader of the annual UNICO race. He’s also providing leadership as one of the few seniors in the VHS running program this season.
During the 2011-2012 school year, the Verona Sports Boosters will be recognizing a different senior athlete at Verona High School every week. The Boosters support male and female athletes in all VHS sports through a variety of fundraisers and recognition events.
