Many of you walk with your kids to school every day but you’ll have an extra incentive to do so tomorrow. Wednesday, October 5 is Walk To School Day in Verona. Started by Tom Jung, this is a yearly effort to promote the ease of getting to Verona’s neighborhood schools on foot. We’ve already heard that baseball mascot Jack the Jackal will be walking with students from Brookdale Avenue elementary school, who will gather at the corner of Sunset and Brookside Avenues for the final march to school.
Tomorrow is also the day for elementary school children to bring in their entries for this year’s Idle-Free Verona poster contest, sponsored by the Verona Environmental Commission. One winning poster will be selected from each school and its creator will be given a $50 check at a Town Council ceremony later this year. The contest raises awareness for the VEC’s efforts to get parents to turn off their car’s engine while they are waiting for their children at school. Pollution caused by idling car engines is a factor in allergies, asthma, heart and lung disease and cancer. It is illegal in New Jersey to idle for more than three minutes.
