A bishop, a rabbi and an imam will join together to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11 by leading an interfaith service in the nation’s oldest Episcopal cathedral building. People of all faiths and beliefs are invited to attend the service, entitled Compassion in Action, on Sunday, September 11, 2011 at 3 p.m. in the historic Trinity & St. Philip’s Cathedral, located at 608 Broad Street, Newark, in Military Park.

“The anniversary of the September 11th tragedy virtually demands an interfaith response,” according to the Rt. Rev. Mark M. Beckwith, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark and one of the organizers of the event. “People of every faith can come together to emphasize how our traditions are meant to build peace, not the violence espoused by religious radicals.”

Emphasizing the common values of the three Abrahamic faiths, the service will blend scripture and reflections based on the Old and New Testaments and the Qur’an, with music from the Jewish and Christian traditions, and the Al-Adhan, the Islamic call to prayer.

Leaders of the event will be Bishop Beckwith, Rabbi Matthew Gewirtz of Temple B’nai Jeshurun in Short Hills, and Imam W. Deen Shareef of Masjid Waarith ud Deen in Irvington. The three leaders work together to support violence-reduction efforts in Newark through the Newark Interfaith Coalition for Hope and Peace, which includes Christian, Jewish and Muslim leaders from the city and surrounding suburbs. The event is cosponsored by the Episcopal Diocese of Newark and the Cathedral Church of Trinity & St. Philip, as well as by the Newark Interfaith Coalition.

Trinity & St. Philip’s Cathedral is located at 608 Broad Street, Newark. Parking is available in the Military Park parking garage accessible from either Broad Street or Center Street.
