Where In Verona Is It? The Hilltop Water Tank

If we were the scolding sort, we’d say that you would have gotten the answer to this week’s “Where In Verona” contest a whole lot faster if you had been to Town Council meetings this year. There’s been a lot of discussion of the Water Tank #3, as the feature just off White Rock Road near the Hilltop Reservation is more formally known.

Tank #3 and its companions, Tank #1 at the top of Fairview Avenue and Tank #2 at the Claridge condo complex, are likely to figure into Verona’s municipal revenues for years to come. Why? Because water and sewer services are in short supply, here and around the world. Verona can sell both to neighboring towns and reap the benefits.

Not too long ago, Tank #3 was headed for the scrap heap. It belonged to Essex County and had served the Essex County Penitentiary, which is now being torn down to make way for the next phase of development at the Hilltop. Verona bought it from the county for $1, but we had to spend money to refurbish it, which didn’t seem to make sense to some of the people who have been at the council meetings. But the tank spares us from buying more water from the Passaic Valley Water Commission, which has been having … well, let’s just call them “issues”. And we are in the position to sell water to Essex Fells and North Caldwell, which town management is actively pursuing.

So let’s raise a glass (of water) to MyVeronaNJ.com photographer extraordinaire Fred Goode, who stumped pretty much everybody this week.
