If you read our profile of nonagenarian artist Joe Schifano a few weeks back, you might remember that he was readying a painting for this year’s Essex County Senior Citizens Juried Art Show and Exhibition If you are age 60 or older and want to compete alongside him, you haveĀ until Monday, August 1 to submit your work. There are 11 categories for entries in the show, which is open to professional and non-professional artists alike.
Senior citizens must be at least 60 years old and a resident of Essex County to participate. Senior citizens with professional status must have sold their art through commercial channels, have had their work exhibited in a professional gallery or held professional membership in a guild or association. Seniors with non-professional status do not meet any of the above criteria.
First and second place awards will be presented in the following categories: oil, acrylic, watercolor/gouache, print, pastel, drawing, mixed media/collage/assemblage, photography, computer imagery, sculpture or craft. First place winners will be eligible to participate in the State Senior Art Contest.
Seniors can submit two entries of original artwork that were completed within the last three years. Artwork must be “show ready,” which means it should be matted, mounted or framed, with screw eyes and wire attached. Art cannot be larger than 36 inches and no smaller than 11 inches in any dimension, including matting and outer edge frame dimension, and sculptures or 3-D crafts cannot exceed 18 inches in any dimension, including the base. Any entry with a value exceeding $400 must have private insurance.
All artwork must be clearly labeled with the following information: the artist’s name, address, title of work, medium, date painted, size, professional or non-professional status, and approximate value of the painting, with the name of the insurance company if it is privately insured. Labels will be provided to artists during drop-off at the Essex County Hospital Center, 204 Grove Avenue, Cedar Grove, on Monday, August 22 between 9 a.m. and noon.
