Colin Farawell and Donna Jo DiNorcia were selected as the Verona High School Sports Boosters’ Athletes of the Year at the Boosters annual Senior Sports Banquet on Tuesday, June 7.
DiNorcia is a three-sport star who has been captain of the girls soccer, basketball and lacrosse teams. She has been named second team SEC for soccer, first team SEC for basketball, first team SEC and first team All-NJIGLL for lacrosse. DiNorcia earned a lacrosse scholarship and will be attending Manhattan College this fall.
Farawell was selected Honorable Mention All-State Lacrosse team. He holds every offensive boys lacrosse record and he is also the Hillbillies all-time wrestling victory leader with 121 and the only school wrestler ever to amass 40 wins in a single season. He also played football for VHS and as a sophomore kicked the go-ahead point at Giants Stadium that sealed the Hillbillies state championship. Colin will continue his studies this fall at The Hill School.
The awards were presented by the 2010 Boys Athlete of the Year winner, Dave Oster. Rebecca Slotkin, the 2010 Girls Athlete of the Year, was in South Africa volunteering at a wildlife rescue preserve and was unable to attend. NFL player Alvin “Ace” Bowen was the guest speaker and mingled with the student athletes throughout the evening telling stories and offering them advice.
Also receiving Boosters honors were Jason Lawrence, Joe Fitzmaurice, Alex Sniatkowski, Jack Denton, Sean McGinley, Carly Maestas, Kara Bartow, Taylor DelColle, Montana DelColle, Caroline Brenneis, Kelly Scully, Colin Cummings, Kweku Sapara -Grant, Logan Bronson, Luke Sheehan, Eddie Congdon, Mike Verschleiser, Eva Brandt, Greg Schiffenhaus and Paige Zebrowski . Montana DelColle and Greg Schiffenhaus were the recipients of the Maroon and White award, which is given to the athletes that show the most team spirit and dedication.
