Obituaries: Richard John Hatzenbuhler

Mr. Richard John Hatzenbuhler, 78, died Friday May 20, 2011 at his home from congestive heart failure. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 26, 2011 at 2:00 pm at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Montclair, New Jersey. Interment will be at the Ferndale Cemetery in Johnstown, N.Y.

Born in Johnstown, Mr. Hatzenbuhler resided in Montclair before moving to Verona 45 years ago. Richard retired in 1990 as a senior vice president with First Fidelity Bank, N.A, New Jersey (Wells Fargo) where he managed and directed the Financial Institutions Division. He was active within the New Jersey political arena, serving as an Essex County Republican Committee member and consulting with various congressional banking committees on forging a new Holding Company Act for the New Jersey banking industry. He was a founding member of the national coalition of check payment systems.

He attended Syracuse University and on his return from serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, received a Bachelor of Science degree from Hartwick College, New York. During his life Richard was active on the boards of various not-for-profit organizations including The Montclair Kimberley Academy, COPE Center, Inc., Planned Parenthood of Essex County, Children’s Foundation, Short Hills and Day Nurseries Inc., Montclair. An avid golfer, he served on the executive committee of the Metropolitan Golf Association and was an active member of the advisory and tournament committees. He was a member of the Montclair Golf Club, the Bradford Bath and Tennis Club and a former member of the Upper Montclair Country Club. He was also a member of the Grand Lodge of the Most Ancient and Honorable Society of Free and Accepted Masons for the State of New Jersey.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 53 years, Marilyn Smith Hatzenbuhler, a daughter, Kristine H. O’Connor, son-in-law, Michael J. O’Connor, and granddaughter, Kelsey S. O’Connor, of Essex Fells, a brother, George Hatzenbuhler, of Palm Coast, Florida and many nieces and nephews.
