About 40 students and their parents gathered at Laning Avenue School on April 29 to celebrate Earth Day and Arbor Day 2011.

With tools in hand and no fear of getting dirty, this green team was on a mission to beautify the school grounds. By day’s end, the students had cleaned up all debris around the school grounds, sprinkled grass seed on the front lawn, planted brightly colored pansies in the planters, covered the gardens with mulch and helped Laning parent Ray Farro plant and beautiful new crab apple tree.

After finishing all the tasks, students could plant a seedling in a recycled container to take home and enter the raffle. Prizes included reusable lunch bags, gardening tools, and books. All left the event with a seed packet and a message: Make every day Earth Day by remembering to reduce, reuse and recycle!

The Laning Environmental Committee and Property and Grounds Committee thank all the hard-working students and parents who helped make the event a success. Also, a special thank you goes out to Ray Farro Landscaping for its generous donation of plantings and labor.
