If you could add one new service to Verona’s budget, what would it be?
If I could add one new service to Verona’s budget it would be a “Reverse 9-1-1” communications system, similar to the one used by the Verona Public Schools (which is funded, in part, by the School Community Association at each school). As a public safety tool, such a communications system could quickly and efficiently notify every resident in the event of an emergency. Information and instructions could be sent to home phones and cell phones in voice and text formats. The communication could cover the entire town or be targeted to certain neighborhoods and areas. Whatever the nature of the emergency (power outages, broken water mains, storm damage, public health concerns, etc.), the town could be proactive in informing the affected residents and minimize the impact of the emergency by directing residents on how to deal with the situation.<
In addition to residents, the “Reverse 9-1-1” communications system could include businesses and other entities registering for the service. While public safety would be the primary use for this communication service, reasonable use for Verona public service messages, town-wide event reminders and pertinent announcements could also be permitted. In addition, the system could be used to survey residents to obtain input for Town Council decisions on programs and projects.
