Montclair’s municipal budget woes have brought it higher taxes and cut its support for the arts. But at a Township Council meeting this week, officials approved spending $750,000 for a major makeover of blighted South Park Street. The work will widen the sidewalks on the strip, which connects Bloomfield Avenue to Church Street, to extend the pedestrian mall feel of that street. Part of the work will be funded with a $500,000 interest-free loan from the state; officials voting for the project said they expect higher ratables will offset the project’s cost.
