A local group of fathers and daughters is getting together this Sunday, March 27, from 1 to 3 p.m. outside Walgreens in Verona for a bake sale.
While that may not seem like such a big deal (bake sales happen all the time), the news story that inspired this activity is. On March 13, 2011, “60 Minutes” aired the story Hard Times Generation: Homeless Kids reporting on how the downturned economy is affecting the homelessness of children in America. The story focuses on childhood homelessness in Orlando, Fla., also known as the “happiest place on earth” and was heartbreaking. My husband and I saw it and so did Joe Pecora, a Verona dad who participates in this father/daughter group. After seeing the story, Pecora was inspired to pull the group together for a bake sale to raise money to help those in need. The proceeds of the bake sale will go to the Human Needs Food Pantry in Montclair.
The bake sale this past Sunday was quite successful. Thanks to the efforts of the Adventure Guides group in Verona over $350 was raised to donate to the Human Needs Food Pantry.
I’d be interested in finding out more information about this father-daughter group. Do they have a web site?
They don’t, but we’ll get somebody to get in touch with you.
The group is part of the Adventure Guides program sponsored by the YMCA. http://www.montclairymca.org/AdventureGuides.html. Please contact Paul Mickiewicz of the Montclair Y for more information.
