On Friday night, the Verona-Glen Ridge Hockey team beat Montclair, for the second time this season, 4-2.

In the previous game played between the two, junior Matt Lander of Glen Ridge scored the game’s only goal. He started off this game just as he left it–with another goal. With the assistance of senior Alekos Polis and junior Max Linnett–both of Glen Ridge–Lander was able to put the puck in the back of the net to kick off the night.

Montclair’s Evan Janifer quickly answered Lander’s goal with one of his own to send the teams to locker room a with a 1-1 tie at the end of the first.

Dylan DeCandia, a Verona freshman, put VGR back on top with a goal early in the second. However, Janifer scored his second goal seven minutes later.

The third period was all VGR, when Glen Ridge senior and Co-captain Nick Martell, who also had an assist, scored three minutes into the period. VGR would never relinquish that lead, and Verona senior and Co-captain Greg Schiffenhaus sealed the deal with his empty net goal.

VGR goaltender Matt Brehne of Verona stopped 19 of Montclair’s 21 shots and helped VGR to clinch the first spot in their division.

As the clock reached zero, VGR’s bench cleared to tackle the junior goalie and congratulate each other on securing a first-round bye for the playoffs. VGR’s next game, which hasn’t yet been schedule, will be their first playoff game.
