The first thing you need to know is that tonight, Saturday, December 11, the Verona-Glen Ridge Hockey team beat a team from Canada, Kennebecasis Valley High School. The second thing you need to know is that it was one heck of a game, with all the physicality you’d expect from a Canadian team answered, skate for skate and stick for stick, by our guys. The third thing is that V-GR nailed the 4-3 win with just 7 seconds to go in the final period.
Did we shout? Did we scream? You bet we did.
For V-GR, the match was its second win in as many days, after putting away a 5-4 win over a tough Nutley team on Friday night. That game was dominated by the Glen Ridge side of the team, with Matt Lander, Nick Martell and Alekos Polis piling on the goals. Polis, one of the co-captains from the Glen Ridge side of the team, had two of the scores tonight. Martell added one as did Verona’s Greg Schiffenhaus, captured in the video below. (We’ve got one of the Polis scores on our YouTube site.)
“We came together as a team in the last period and gave everything we had,” said Head Coach Andor Kish. “We stressed throwing the puck on net and crashing the net for a rebound. By throwing the puck on net and crashing the net we were able to tie it and eventually win the game.”
V-GR plays Roxbury in another non-conference game at the Codey arena on Wednesday, December 15 at 4:45 p.m.
