Verona resident Lance Barnard, a senior at Montclair Kimberley Academy, was a panelist at the New Jersey Financial Literacy Summit held at Rutgers University on Wednesday,October 13. Discussing “Financial Literacy in the Global Marketplace”, Barnard joined seasoned financial professionals William Ballinger, president and chief executive of Allstate New Jersey Insurance and Patrick Cozza, CEO and regional head of HSBC Insurance, and higher education experts including Dr. Barbara O’Neill and Dr. William Rodgers from Rutgers in speaking to a sold-out audience of 450.

Barnard received media attention last spring following the launch of his Web site Teens Guide to Money designed to educate teens about earning, saving, investing and spending their money wisely, through information on topics as varied as the stock exchange, resume-writing tips and IRAs.

The Financial Literacy Summit was designed to raise awareness of the importance of financial literacy education and the resources available to support instruction in grades K-12, as well as the importance of a new financial literacy high school graduation requirement. It was attended by New Jersey educators, administrators and policymakers and included speakers such as Muriel Siebert, the first woman member of the New York Stock Exchange.
