The New Jersey State League of Municipalities is a group that works in Trenton to limit how much state government takes from municipal coffers. It has just released a survey on tax appeals, which found that 19,788 tax appeals were filed in its survey group of 150 municipalities in 2010, up from 13,760 for 2009.
And no, it’s not all because of revaluations. According to the NJSLM, However, only five of the 150 municipalities that participated in the survey had revals. In 2009, 23 of the participating municipalities had had revals. The survey group is drawn from all 21 counties and includes both large and small towns.
The average property value reduction for 2010 was close to $5,000. The League says it is now encouraging the state Legislature to recognize the budgetary impact of successful property tax appeals.
