The Homestead rebate checks that used to defray New Jersey’s sky-high property taxes are gone, but you should still pay attention to the mail you get this week from the state.

New Jersey’s Treasury Department has begun to mail out applications for the new Homestead program, which could net you a tax credit on your property tax bill. To be eligible, you have to be a New Jersey resident who owned a home here as of October 1, 2009 and paid property taxes on it. Your gross income has to be $75,000 or less or, if you are a  senior or disabled, $150,000 or less. If you’d rather not wait for the mail, you can download the application here.

The deadline to file is November 1.
