Monday morning is the 28th annual Labor Day Classic 5K race put on by the Verona Chapter of UNICO National and the Essex Running Club. The course starts in front of Our Lady of the Lake church at 9:30 a.m. and winds its way through Verona streets to a finish in Verona Park. There’s also a 1-mile health walk and a 1-mile fun run. No cars will be allowed in the park while the race is on, so best plan on walking down to cheer on the racers.
The course for the 5K race goes south on Lakeside to Hillside and up Hillside to Forest. The racers will turn right onto Forest and go down almost to the end before looping back down to the park.
Presenting sponsors include Hillcrest Farms, Investors Savings Bank and Windsor Healthcare Communities. Supporting sponsors include Eight Hills Caterers, O’Neil’s Restaurant and Pub, Fred Hill Sports Academy, TD Bank, Dynamic Speed and Fitness and Mountainside Hospital. In addition, 21 other sponsors from businesses and residents in the area have joined in the chapter’s efforts to raise funds for scholarships, local charities, and cancer and Cooley’s Anemia research.
