The kids who were drilling at the Verona United Soccer Club‘s camp this past week got a major treat: A visit from two stars of the Red Bulls soccer team, one of whom also played for New Zealand in the World Cup.
Jeremy Hall and Andrew Boyens talked to the group about what it’s like to train and play for a pro team. They talked about their game superstitions (Boyens puts his left shin guard on first), and they answered a lot of questions, like this one directed to Boyens, who was on New Zealand’s World Cup team: “Did the vuvuzela’s annoy you?” “In a word, yes,” replied Boyens. But they also signed a lot of autographs–on cards, soccer balls, T shirts and anything else the kids had on hand. Camp-goers also got a ticket to a Red Bulls game at the club’s new stadium in Harrison.
Hall and Boyens weren’t the only members of the Red Bulls organization in attendance last week. The camp, which was open to kids ages 5 to 14, was led by Michael Ross and Greg Burgess of the Red Bulls Academy, and involved six teachers from England, Scotland and America. The Academy offers both day and residential summer soccer camps, as well as a cost-free development program. All the information is here.
