The Hilltop Conservancy has hosted many family bike rides through the Verona nature preserve over the years. But on August 21, it’s going to hold its first bike race just for kids.
Working with the Essex County Parks Department and the Jersey Off Road Bicycle Association, the Conservancy is inviting cyclists ages 4 to 15 to ride and race for prizes on a specially prepared mile course through the woods. Best yet, the race is a fundraiser for an organization that does a lot to preserve one of the best woodlands in Essex County.
Here are the rules: The course is next to the sports field parking lot on Courter Lane and Mountain Avenue in North Caldwell. Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. and the races begin at 9 a.m. Racers will be divided by school grade with the youngest riders going first. Any bike in good working order is eligible to race but helmets are mandatory. The race costs $10 per racer, which includes a bike inspection, and prizes will be awarded to the top racers. Boys and girls may be combined if there is a low number of registrants for a class.
