Superintendent Charles Sampson has announced that Verona has been named a Trustee District for the Garden State Coalition of Schools.
The GSCS is an advocacy group begun by suburban schools in New Jersey about two decades ago to give their concerns equal voice in Trenton with the urban districts that have dominated the state’s school funding discussions. Being named a trustee gives Verona the chance to shape policy at the GSCS; yesterday, Sampson was already present at a GSCS meeting in East Brunswick devoted to the impact of Gov. Chris Christie’s 2% spending cap. Among the other GSCS trustees is Glen Ridge, which recently announced that is considering converting some or all of its public schools into private schools.
“In light of the recent budget changes and reduction of state aid to our schools, we are confident that assuming a leadership position within an organization that represents the interests of like-minded schools in New Jersey will only enhance our ability to effectively manage our school district,” said Sampson in a prepared statement. “We also believe strongly that this designation will allow Verona to collaborate with a number of other school districts across the state to continually improve our approach to the daily and long term planning necessary to assure the continued success of our schools.”
