Athletic Director Gary Farishian instructed VHS coaches to cancel open gym varsity sport practices today due to the extreme heat and poor air quality. The high school gyms are not air conditioned.

The VCC gym isn’t air-conditioned either, but men’s basketball will be held as scheduled this evening, with fans blowing. Men’s softball is also on; extra water coolers will be available. Lax players who are scheduled to practice this evening should check with their coaches to see if it is still on since the turf field can get very hot.

Recreation Department Director Jim Cunningham has confirmed that the Verona Pool will remain open until 8 p.m. tonight, its regular weekday closing hour. As for the summer playgrounds program, Cunningham says a note will be posted at all locations tomorrow reminding parents that the schools are not air conditioned. Parents are being told that if they are sending their kids to the playgrounds, they should send them with plenty of water.
