Summer is a great time to try new things- especially things that take time and patience to learn, but don’t interfere with homework. Art is one of  those things. Art camp however, is not easy to come by. We have a couple of options in the area though and here are some places to start.

Has your child ever had the opportunity to throw pottery on a wheel? Turn an idea in his or her head into a real clay figure? Have you seen beauty in your child’s art, and wanted the opportunity to expand and develop that raw talent? CH Studios is offering 8 weeks of  camp at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit in Verona with both morning and afternoon sessions based on the age of campers (ages 5-9 or 10-15). Themes range from summer creatures to mythology to super heroes. The instructor will use the themes to introduce new techniques in painting, pottery, crafts and sculptural cartooning. Cost for the camp is $150 for one week or $280 for two weeks. There are coupons available on the Web site, and space is limited so contact Chevon to reserve your child’s space.

The Montclair Art Museum’s SummerART camp provides four two-week sessions of thematic programming during which children will work in mediums such as drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, and printmaking.  Children are grouped in age-specific classes (5 – 7, 8 and 9, and 10 – 12). Children ages 5 to 7 may participate in the Morning Program from 9:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. or the Afternoon Program from 3 to 5 p.m. Children ages 8 to 12 may choose any one of the programs. The pricing is quite extensive, so click here for camp costs based on age and length of session or call at (973)-746-5555.

StudioKids Art is newly opened this past spring and is offering art camp for kids ages 5-12 and runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.  With locations in both Verona and Montclair, the themes covered in this camp look fun and are original. With projects and activities ranging from cartooning to fashion design to city planning and ceramics, campers will be kept quite busy.  The cost for most weeks (except July 5th) is $275 per week. A snack is provided, and the kids are to bring their own lunches. Space is limited, so click here for more information and to register online.

Dragonfly Studios in Cedar Grove offers a weekly art camp from June 28 through August 27. Each session is from 1-4pm Monday through Friday. Campers participate in painting, pottery, cartooning and crafts and each week has its own theme. The cost is $175 per week and each camper receives two pottery pieces, two paintings one cartoon and one craft. (Discounts for multiple weeks & referrals). To register for camp, contact Christina Havens at: (973) 239-4337.[mappress]
