The rumors are true: There will soon be two Subways in town. The newest of the sandwich franchises will occupy the space formerly occupied by Liberty Travel on Bloomfield Avenue between Mount Prospect and Sunset Avenues, near the Montclair border. It will open for business in the next couple of months, according to Yogesh Dave, regional manager for Subway Redevelopment company in Totowa. There is also a Subway in the center of town, near South Prospect Street, in a strip mall.
Why two Subways in Verona? “This store will have a different demographic pattern,” explains Dave. “We are looking to get traffic from Newark-Pompton Turnpike as well as Bloomfield Avenue. There is a lot of morning traffic in that location, so it is a good location for breakfast.” Subway launched a new breakfast program in April featuring Seattle’s Best coffee, which is owned by Starbucks‘ parent company, and a popular English muffin sandwich made with egg whites, he says. Seating and parking will be limited at the new store, he says, but the company is banking on takeout business; it will also offer lunchtime delivery service.
The franchise will be owned and run by Dan Johnston, an Iraqi war veteran from Englewood.
The new subway breakfast sandwich is actually very good…. egg white on whole wheat muffin then add whatever like tomatpes hot peppers… I have been getting them in the city when im off the train..and no lines ever because no one goes there for breakfast
Editors Note: The owner of the restaurant, Don Johnston, has contacted us with two corrections: Delivery service at the new Subway at 45 Bloomfield Avenue will only be available on catering orders. In addition, his first name is Don, not Dan. He is indeed a combat veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Welcome to Verona, Don.
